About the Author

Cal is in love with Montana. Once, coming back from a long-ago and faraway war, the former paratrooper remembers how he had felt his roots sink deep into the prairie land where he grew up. He was lucky enough to spend his formative years on a hard-scrabble ranch lacking electricity, running water, or central heat—where winter snow sifted through his cracked bedroom window near the horse hide blanket that covered him, and the two-holer was fifty feet out back.

The grandson of a cowboy who loved pinto horses and great grandson of a 1st Cavalryman, he graduated from Cal-State in Fullerton, California, and now lives west of Shepherd with his two long-haired dachshunds, Muki and Spike, and several feral cats on a few acres where he can watch the prairie sunrise spread between the Bull Mountains to the north and the sacred Pryor Mountains on the southern horizon. His daughter and her family, lights of his life, live in nearby Billings.
